The track we’ll be opening our next DJ set with
Basement Jaxx: People Of Planet Earth
This features a church organ piece composed by Joe Benjamin, a 70-year-old Bermudan now living in Brixton. Who knows, you might hear it on our new album…
The track we always play to rescue a dancefloor
APDW Vs Basement Jaxx: Red Alert (remix)
We’ve been playing this remix by Analog People In A Digital World for a while. It’ll be released early next year.
The track that’s been unfairly slept on this year
Michel Cleis: Mir A Nero
He had a big track with La Mezcla a few years ago. Mir A Nero is similarly percussive, melodic, and just has a great feel.
The track we’d play to show off our eclectic tastes
Felix: Alim Qasimov: Bayati Shiraz
A classical singer from Azerbaijan, this is one of my newest purchases.
Simon: Marco Benevento: Wolf Trap
I tune into random radio stations online. I heard this on a jazz station from New Orleans, went to the website, found the tracklisting and bought the album. The world is small.
The track that got us out of bed this morning
Baauer: Harlem Shake
A big “trap” track - heavy bass, 808 snares, speeding hats and a hooky noise.
The best track by our favourite new artist
Disclosure: What’s In Your Head
Love what these guys are doing. Good old-fashioned deep house, 2012 style.
The track we’d play at sunset in Ibiza
Basement Jaxx Vs Metropole Orkest: Raindrops
In 2011, we collaborated with conductor/arranger Jules Buckley and the 70-piece Metropole Orkest to reinterpret our back catalogue for an album and two shows at the Barbican. This is one of our favourites.
The track we’d play at our auntie’s wedding
Boom Pam: Wedding Song
A knees-up track we discovered when we released the Gypsy Beats And Balkan Bangers compilation. Boom Pam are actually from Israel but they play a mix of Balkan and Mediterranean music.
The ideal festival track
Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody (Schizofonics remix)
A classic electro-ish rework which always goes down a treat. There’s also a brass band version we play – people sing the whole thing, start to finish. It brings everyone together and it’s a little break from the boom boom.
